Real estate has long been a means for families to accumulate and pass on generational wealth. A necessary component of property ownership is payment of taxes to the local government. When property taxes remain unpaid, that property becomes in danger of auction. A property may fall delinquent for a number of reasons. Sometimes a property owner may not be able to afford the taxes due to financial hardship or change in financial circumstances. Other times, a property owner passes away, and the heirs do not realize they are responsible for the taxes. In some cases, the change of inheritance and responsibility is so far removed from the original owner that no one even knows who is paying the taxes!

As part of our economic justice work, the Campbell County Branch of the NAACP has been working the last few years to help folks keep their family property. Every year, we obtain the 3-year tax delinquency list (available via FOIA) and identify properties in danger of auction. Our Political Action Committee researches the properties and makes efforts to contact the owner or their family to ensure folks know their property is delinquent.

We also believe knowledge is power. Below, we have listed relevant phone numbers and websites so property owners can better stay on top of their tax obligations. We have also included links to relevant Virginia law and resources so you know your rights as a property owner.

NOTE: We have done our best to ensure accurate information and have included links so you can read for yourself! When in doubt, call the Treasurer's Office!
